Why I want to teach drawing.
Drawing is a basic form of non-verbal communication
that everyone is capable of learning. It is not a gift, which is
only understood by the artist, there is no mystery in having the
ability to draw. If, for instance, drawing were taught at an elementary
level along with Reading, Writing and Maths, it might dispel any
myth attached to the process. After all, everybody is taught how
to write; yet we don’t all become authors, journalists or
playwrights. Children at Primary School are provided with crayons,
paper and paints and expected to get on with it, they are neither
taught how to use the materials nor the observational skills required,
and unless a child shows a natural aptitude for drawing, the subject
tends to be considered one of minor importance.
Drawing, as well as being a useful tool for artists
and designers, is a relaxing and pleasurable activity, which can
be enjoyed by anybody. Moving away from more traditional drawing
methods, I am currently exploring the unseen natural world, as viewed
through a microscope. By drawing with a variety of media including
ink, paint, latex and textiles I am creating works of an abstract
composition by using imagination, in conjunction with scientific
images of microscopy. By looking into, rather than just at, nature,
I hope to introduce a new and exciting approach to ‘the drawing
class’.

In the 1980’s I was involved with Northampton Arts Development,
organiser Clare Higney, in children’s and adults art and craft
workshops at Clare Street Community Centre, Northampton. And when

the premises expired.
